The idea to implement a Toronto sales tax to help deal with a budget shortfall won't come to fruition. Budget Chief Shelley Carroll floated the idea during a panel discussion Wednesday but on Thursday, Ontario Municipal Affairs Minister Jim Watson says council doesn't have the authority under the City of Toronto act to impose a general sales tax. He says the idea is not a good one, and if the city wants to deal with a budget shortfall, they have other options, like the land transfer tax, to help boost city coffers.
