The T.T.C. is looking at implementing a policy of mandatory drug and alcohol testing for its employees following a couple of incidents involving workers being impaired on the job. The Amalgamated Transit Union calls it an invasion of privacy. Union head Bob Kinnear says he will fight any such proposal.
Earlier this week, a T.T.C. bus driver blew three times over the legal limit while on the job. Other drivers say it was a freak occurrence and does not justify mandatory testing.
"I've been on the job 29 years," one driver told AM 640 Toronto's Jamie Tawil at Union Station Thursday. "I've never ever seen anybody pulled over like that, drunk on the bus."
Also fuelling the call for testing is a report to be released this month, which suggests T.T.C. maintenance worker Tony Almedia was stoned when he was killed in a repair car crash a year ago.
