    Police investigating another sexual assault
    Winnipeg Police are investigating a serious sexual assault  early  Wednesday morning  in the  300 block of River Avenue      Police say around 2:30   a male entered the residence of a lone 21 year old female victim while she slept.  The male suspect armed himself with a knife and approached the victim.  She  was awakened,   a struggle took place,   and the suspect seriously sexually assaulted the victim.     The male suspect is described as, Aboriginal in appearance,   about 19-26 years old,    5'6" tall,  with a medium build; and wearing a dark coloured hoodie.        The Police service  Sex Crimes Unit  is asking anyone with information about the incident  to contact 204-986-6245 or CrimeStoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

    Lung Association issues warning in light of forest fires
    The Manitoba Lung Association urges people with breathing problems such as asthma and COPD to monitor their breathing and exposure to this forest fire smoke.  It is recommended that people with lung disease remain indoors and keep their doors, windows and fireplace dampers shut. It is also important to use air conditioners on the 'recirculation' setting so outside air will not be moved inside. This applies to your home, office or vehicle. Avoid exercising outdoors. Extra precautions should be taken by children and the elderly.

    Hwy Traffic Act to include bicycles
    The Manitoba NDP has tabled a bill to give municipalities more control over how cyclists use their roadways.  The bill calls for the expansion of the Highway Traffic Act to include bicycles, giving municipalities the power to regulate bicycle traffic through things like active transportation lanes.

    DC-4 aircraft from NWT to help fight Mb forest fires
    A shifting wind and low humidity continue to impact fires in Southeast Manitoba.   While it's a bit cooler today (Wednesday), more high temperatures are forecast for later this week with no precipitation until Friday.  Two additional water bombers from Quebec are now helping fight the fire near Badger.  40 firefighters from B.C. came Tuesday.   A DC-4 aircraft from Northwest Territories is expected Wednesday.  It sprays fire retardant.  The fire near Vita is now 41-hundred square kilometers.  No change in the Marchand fire, still about 11 square kilometers in size.

    No one wants to take lead on improving rural cellphone service
    The Association of Manitoba Municipalities supports the call for improved cellular phone service in Southeastern Manitoba. President Doug Dobrowolski tells CJOB it's really important.       CJOB told you about this story Tuesday,  when MTS claimed there was currently no plan in place to improve service in the fire area.

    Chihuahua-mix killed in West End dog attack
    Winnipeg Animal Services is investigating a dog attack in which a small, chihuahua mix was killed while on a walk with its owner.  Janelle McLeod says her niece's family was out walking "The Fonz" and their other dog down Toronto Avenue when  6 or 7 large dogs attacked her dogs from behind.       Animal Services patrolled the area, but could not find the dogs responsible.

    Mb economic growth forecast at 2.9 percent
    The Western provinces including Manitoba will continue to set the economic pace in Canada according to the Conference Board of Canada's Spring Provincial Outlook.  Associate Director Marie-Christine Bernard sites the mining and energy sectors as reasons behind the strong showing in the west.  Real GDP is forecast to grow by 2.9 percent both Manitoba and Saskatchewan.   Growth in Manitoba was attributed to mining and an expected rebound in Agriculture.

    Mayor clears the air on "ticketgate"
    Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz has brought the hammer down as the Ticketgate affair drags on. Katz made the comments after data obtained from the city clerk's office showed 5 councillors - Fielding, Havixbeck, Wyatt, Browaty and Mayes - all got Jets tickets this season either from the Mayor or from the private sector.  All of those tickets have been declared and Katz says a specific policy on councillors getting tickets is being worked on.  Wednesday afternoon Councillor Dan Vandal declared he got 4 tickets from Mayor Katz. Meanwhile, Katz said he would now like to see the plot of city owned land at The Forks that would have been used for a waterpark turned into a memorial park for Izzy Asper.  Katz said he was neither surprised or disappointed that the latest waterpark proposal failed...but did say if every developer had to produce detailed drawings of their plans before they had been passed...nothing would get done.   On the "tickets" issue,  the Mayor's Office provided CJOB answers to a list of questions posed Wednesday at City Hall.  These are those question and answers.   Which organizations did the Mayor’s Office have season tickets/subscriptions to?     Wildfires continue to burn in southeastern Manitoba
    Yesterday was a relatively good day in the wildfire battle in southeastern Manitoba, but it's not over yet. Gary Friesen of the Manitoba Fire Program tells CJOB crews managed to keep the main fires from growing significantly... Friesen adds though that today's another day, and expects it to be a challenge. He also says every one is hoping forecasted showers for the weekend come true.
