We now know how much carbon will be released into the air thanks to the 2010 Winter Games.

Vanoc is forecasting about 267-thousand tonnes of carbon will be released once the games are done.

But James Tansey with Vanoc’s official carbon partner “Offsetters” says most of that comes from sponsors and spectators.

He says 118-thousand tonnes of that is associated with the direct emissions from Vanoc’s operations in Vancouver, the rest is to do with travel.

Vanoc is only offsetting what it emits directly, which means sponsors and spectators are being asked to buy offsets.

So far, 25 sponsors are on-board, including R-B-C, Bombardier and Samsung.

Vanoc is putting a carbon calculator on its website so spectators can buy their own offsets.
