Hamilton's new police chief is Toronto police Staff Superintendent Glenn De Caire.
De Caire has worked in the infamous Jane-Finch corridor and is best known for bringing police surveillance cameras to Yonge Street.
He also played a major role in upgrading the force's computer system.
The 47 year old most recently managed the operations across 9 police stations, overseeing 2,000 officers.
Other candidates in the running to replace Mullan were Hamilton's two deputy police chiefs Ken Leendertse and Eric Girt -- who will both stay on in their vital roles.
There were two other internal candidates and 7 more from outside the service.
De Caire will take over for outoing Chief Brian Mullan December 9th.

Hamilton police are warning the public not to fall for a bank scam that is making the rounds.
Police say a man, pretending to be a bank employee, called an elderly woman last week and told her that someone was illegally withdrawing money from her VISA account.
The woman was told to withdraw funds from the account for a sting operation to catch the suspect.
The victim was instructed to stay in her vehicle parked across from the bank and a man would come and get the money.
But there was no sting operation, it was a scam.
The suspect is white, in his early 50's, 6-feet tall, with a medium build, dark hair and was wearing dark blue overalls.

McMaster University has captured three of five Polanyi awards given to young university researchers in Ontario.
Laura Parker is an assistant professor in McMaster University’s Department of Physics & Astronomy.
Amelia De Falco is a sessional lecturer and post-doctoral fellow in the Department of English & Cultural Studies.
Michael Kiang is an assistant professor of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences at Mac, and is a psychiatrist in the mental health & addictions department of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton
The recipients receive twenty-thousand dollars each.
The award is named in honour of the 1986 Nobel-prize winner, which recognizes outstanding researchers in the early stages of their career who are continuing their post-doctoral studies at an Ontario university.

A McDonald's restaurant in Burlington has been robbed at knife point.
The Halton police tactical team and canine unit were called out after the McDonald's on Guelph Line and Prospect Street was hit around 10 o'clock last night.
Nobody was hurt.

Lots of nervous excitement at a school in West Hamilton.
A coyote showed up near the entrance to Prince Phillip elementary school on Rifle Range Road yesterday.
The principal was able to scare it off with an umbrella, but the students were kept inside during both the morning and afternoon recess as a precaution.
Animal control officials are monitoring the situation.
They say there's nothing about the coyotes' behaviour that indicates a threat.
They say you're actually more at risk with a your grandmother's dog than a coyote.

Local health officials admit they're surprised.
The number of people testing positive for the H1N1 flu virus in Hamilton is on the rise again.
Local health officials had thought the numbers had peaked in our area last week but apparently that's not the case.
They are urging everyone to take advantage of the flu shot clinics that are now open to everyone.
The provincial chief medical officer of health, Dr. Arlene King, says flu activity is still high in the province, more than double than during a normal flu season.

A major event for the CHML/Y108 Christmas Tree of Hope campaign is on tap tonight.
The 21st annual Realtors Association of Hamilton-Burlington Charity Auction begins at 6 o'clock at Michelangelo's.
The live auction starts at 8pm.
Tickets are 20-dollars at the door, or can be purchased in advance at the association's office on York Boulevard.
The CHML/Y108 Christmas Tree of Hope Blitz Day Radiothon goes December 4th, as does the Tree of Hope concert.
The free concert is held at Gore Park and features Universal artist Suzie McNeil and 2009 "Big Break" competition winner Marshall Dane.
The Christmas Tree of Hope was founded in 1976 in an effort to bring hope to kids and families struggling through the holiday season.

An alleged member of the Original Blood Brothers gang has been taken off the streets.
This, after a search warrant execution by the Gangs & Weapons Unit on a home on Bilardi Court in east Hamilton yesterday.
22-year-old Vi Danh is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking crack cocaine.
Officers seized about 5-thousand dollars worth, as well as some cash.

Police are looking for 2 young men after a stabbing in the east and.
It happened yesterday morning on Delawana Drive.
A 17-year-old was stabbed in the legs and buttocks after words were exchanged with 2 others between the ages of 17 and 19.
Thankfully a neighbour called 911 after seeing the victim in distress.

Mayor Fred Eisenberger wants to set up a citizens' jury to discuss the area rating issue.
He's expected to introduce the idea at next week's committee-of-the-whole meeting.
The controversial area rating taxation plan, imposed after the city amalgamated, limits the tax impact for communities that don't receive some services.
Basically, it means the suburbs pay less for receiving less transit, culture and recreation, and fire service.
