Burlington house fire sends man to hospital
Fire Crews responded to a fire on Previn Ct.  in Burlington during the dinner hour Thursday evening.  The fire started in the garage when a 59 year old man was working on a vehicle in his garage when an explosion engulfed his house and the car he was working on.  The blast knocked the man into the driveway.  Neigbours pulled the man to safety and called 911. When fire crews arrived they were faced with a significant fire that had extended into the house.   The fire damage to the house is primarily in the garage, second floor and roof.  The first floor received extensive water and smoke damage.   Firefighters quickly knocked down the majority of the fire; however, crews have been dealing with stubborn spot fires in the attic area. The man was transferred to Hamilton General with what police called serious injuries.  Investigation into the cause of the fire is pending after full fire control is established.  The preliminary estimate of loss from the fire currently is being established at $600000.

Suicide prevention strategy to be unveiled
What is for many an uncomfortable topic moves into the spotlight on Friday morning. Local officials will be gathering at city hall to launch Hamilton's suicide prevention strategy. In 2005, the city recorded 51 deaths by suicide.  That's far more than the combined number of deaths by motor vehicle collision and homicide for that same year in Hamilton. Jennifer Brasch, Director of Emergency Psychiatry Services at St. Joseph's Healthcare, says local supports must provide people with hope and viable alternatives to ending their life. She adds that the strategy has been a work in progress for the past three years.

Home builders a busy bunch in August
Local home builders were hopping in August. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says total housing starts last month were roughly double the average for this time of the year and the strongest month for starts since 2004. There were 529 new home starts in the Hamilton CMA last month, up from 137 in August of 2009. There were notable increases in new home construction for all home types, but single-detached starts in Hamilton, and apartment starts in Burlington, were the primary drivers behind the increase in total starts. On a year-to-date basis, more than 25-hundred new homes have been built in Hamilton and the surrounding area. That compares to just over 12-hundred last year at this time.
