City gets $200-million for "top priority"
It's been called Hamilton's number one priority. The federal and provincial governments have each committed 100 million dollars towards upgrading the Woodward Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant. The City of Hamilton will pay the other 256 million. The expansion must be completed by 2016 and will allow the city to handle future growth and ensure that it can treat all of the effluent that comes into the treatment facility.   Mayor Eisenberger says that means no more worrying about flooded basements when he goes to bed at night during a heavy rainstorm. The upgrades will also result in better water quality within Hamilton Harbour.   John Baird, Canada's Transport and Infrastructure Minister and Brad Duguid, Ontario's Minister of Energy and Infrastructure were among those involved in the announcement on Friday morning at the Parks Canada Discovery Centre.

The Hamilton-Centre MP and provincial NDP leader also insists that our governments must seek job guarantees when providing "targetted investments" to private industry. It's the February unemployment rate of 8.2% was the lowest reported by Statistics Canada since last April, before the country began to recover from a major recession. As a result, there was a net gain of 21,000 full- and part-time jobs in February. Hamilton's jobless rate was 8.7% in February, down from a three month average of 8.9%. Men aged 55 and over accounted for all of February's employment gain. The agency said 46,000 of the jobs created in February came in the government, public service sector, although the private sector also posted gains. The goods producing sector, which again posted large losses during last year's slump, also fared well as the troubled manufacturing industry picked up 17,000 workers, and natural resources rose 11,000.
