Security cameras will soon be a requirement in Hamilton's taxi cabs.
The city's planning committee approved the measure on Tuesday morning. It is still subject to final approval from City Council next week, but is scheduled to take effect next May..
Councillor Sam Merulla says it's about protecting both drivers and passengers against potential violence and other wrongdoing.
Taxi shields will not be required, however operators will be allowed to install them at their own discretion.
The decision follows several years of often-heated debate.
