EDMONTON/630 CHED
11/6/2009
One of the brightest lights in Edmonton theatre has gone out with the death of Grant MacEwan Theatre arts founder Tim Ryan. But, one of the city's most respected reviewers, says his legacy will live on.
Liz Nichols has been reviewing theatre in Edmonton since the mid-eighties and has seen every show Ryan directed. She has also watched his students bloom into bona fide actors and singers. Nichols says he was one of a kind. "A real genius teacher combined with an expert director." she says, "has a huge ripple effect on the culture and I think Tim would definitely fall into that category."
Nichols adds that what Ryan didn't know about musical theatre simple didn't exist. She says he was a rare mix of enthusiasm and knowledge.
Ryan moved his family from Ohio 25 years ago to take the position at MacEwan. His daughters Kate and Bridget, both accomplished actors, are well known to Edmonton theatre goers.(ly)
