Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach has told Tory delegates who will vote on his leadership this weekend that he has the courage to take bold stands and not back down.
Stelmach''s leadership is being questioned by some party veterans but he says playing it safe is not what he's about and he's not afraid of criticism.
In a rousing speech Friday night at the party's annual general meeting in Red Deer, Stelmach told the crowd that he won't back down from his principles because ``Progressive Conservatives battle through adversity together.''
Stelmach is facing a mandatory leadership review vote Saturday by 1,300 Tory delegates.
Recent polls suggest that Tory popularity among Alberta voters is sinking fast in the face of a challenge from a new right-wing party, the Wildrose Alliance. Stelmach's government won a lopsided majority last year, but has been harshly criticized on several fronts including its handling of the H1N1 pandemic.
