On Wednesday afternoon, Laura Bobak tweeted a screenshot of her Presto transit card activity over the past six days, after she found out that her daily commutes were being tracked by Metrolinx – down to the exact times and dates. She wrote: “Wow. Amount of personal info @Metrolinx (aka govt) has on your daily routines, whereabouts, hours you keep astounding #ttc #PRESTO #topoli”.
This is a concern for Ann Cavoukian, the executive director of the Privacy and Big Data Institute at Ryerson University and Former Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario. She joins the show to tell us and expresses that consent from customers is needed.
What are your thoughts on the privacy of presto? Are you concerned? Or not, because we are already getting tracked in other ways, like social media? Or is this different because it’s the government?
