It is another showing of the GAME AWARDS! An attempt by this wonderful industry to honour those who have given their life to this craft of gaming and get some of that Oscar money. 2016 has been a pretty stellar year for video games, meaning tonight get ready for effusive celebration by a lot of bearded men.
Here’s everything you needed to see from the awards show last night in just 2 minutes time.
GAME OF THE YEAR
Recognizing a game that delivers the absolute best experience across all creative and technical fields.
We believe that although Inside is a technical marvel it won’t win out against the star power that is Nathan Drake and Uncharted 4. Surprisingly what hasn’t been mentioned, the new Deus Ex, Dark Souls 3 or my personal favourite, Tyranny.
BEST STUDIO/GAME DIRECTION
Recognizing a game studio for outstanding creative vision and innovation in game direction and design.
An earnestly tough choice for the panel. Every studio produced a game that earned millions of dollars and was rated in the 90% percentile of excellence. Naughty Dog for should win, Blizzard for will win – that Overwatch love is STRONG.
For outstanding storytelling and narrative development in a game.
Given the crowd I believe the indie’s will win out. Inside taking the gold, as it’s provided an alternative to the current traditional narrative structures in these other contestants, but the REAL winner here has to be The Banner Saga 2. Continuing the story for the first with all the right beats, play it now.
BEST ART DIRECTION
For outstanding creative and technical achievement in artistic design and animation.
Some pretty serious missteps in this department. Dark Souls 3, Banner Saga 2, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, No Man’s Sky, just off the top of my pretty little head are more deserving of this award. Give it to ABZU, dolphins kill sharks.
BEST MUSIC/SOUND DESIGN
For outstanding audio, inclusive of score, original song, licensed soundtrack and sound design.
If this is the pitiful group we have to choose from Inside easily takes it. Surprised to see no Mafia 3 or even Watch Dogs 2. Both games had sound design techniques that were vast and complex while also supporting greater themes.
Award to an individual for voice-over acting, motion and/or performance capture.
ALEX HERNANDEZ AS LINCOLN CLAY, MAFIA III
CISSY JONES AS DELILAH, FIREWATCH
EMILY ROSE AS ELENA, UNCHARTED 4: A THIEF’S END
NOLAN NORTH AS NATHAN DRAKE, UNCHARTED 4: A THIEF’S END
RICH SOMMER AS HENRY, FIREWATCH
TROY BAKER AS SAM DRAKE, UNCHARTED 4: A THIEF’S END
Nolan and Troy already have the keys to the city. Cissy or Rich would both be great choices. I do think Nolan will get the nod.
GAMES FOR IMPACT AWARD
For a thought provoking game with a profound pro-social meaning or message.
Sea Hero Quest
That Dragon, Cancer
1979 Revolution, is one of the best games of the year but the emotional impact of That Dragon, Cancer will push it over the edge. One teaches you about the horrors of humanity the other makes you live it.
