28-year old Raj Zimran Asimi of Brampton has been identified as the man killed in a two-vehicle collision on Hwy. 401 overnight Friday.
The incident happened in the express lanes at Dixie Rd. around 1am.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says Asimi’s vehicle first struck a pole in a minor incident. He pulled off at a nearby ramp to inspect the damage.
“As he got out of his vehicle, he possibly entered some of the live lanes of traffic or was obviously on the highway itself when he was struck by another vehicle,” he says.
Emergency crews worked to release the trapped man from under the vehicle, who was later pronounced dead on scene.
Police had closed the eastbound express lanes of Hwy. 401 from Hurontario St. to Hwy. 427 for about three hours, and reopened around 6am.
Statistics released Friday say pedestrian fatalities on OPP-patrolled roads is the highest in eight years.
