A Hamilton city councillor is calling for the removal of an Ontario judge, who reportedly wore a hat supporting Donald Trump in a courtroom.
Councillor Matthew Green says the provinces’ court system should be strictly non-partisan.
He spoke out on social media Friday after media reports that Judge Bernd Zabel wore a hat reading “Make America Great Again”.
According to Green’s statement, Zabel had “incredibly poor taste and judgement while presiding in court” and showed “bias that both disrespects and discredits the entire legal system [calling] into question the impartiality of judgments made by this particular person”.
Green is calling on Zabel to step down from the bench “effective immediately”.
He hopes the Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice will take action and remove Zabel from the bench if he does not resign.
