Lot of controversy over sports teams with indigenous names and logos, one of them being the Mississauga Chiefs.
The Mississauga Girls Hockey League team has had the name since day 1. Their logo however, an arrowhead, is a recent change after a dialogue with the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation.
New Credit Chief Stacey Laforme as cited in a recent article said, “I don’t believe they have to change (their name). They’re not the only people who have chiefs. We have police chiefs, fire chiefs…”
Though the Mississauga Chiefs have the blessing of the New Credit First Nation community, Brad Gallant, of Qalipu Mi’kmaq ancestry, has filed a complaint, and wants the city of Mississauga to end its “subsidy” to the five hockey teams using indigenous names or logos.
