A Canadian judge has ordered an Alberta woman to stop allowing her five year old son to wear girls’ clothes.
The Medicine Hat mother says that her son, who was born male, began showing signs that he identified as a girl at a very young age.
The mother decided to seek professional help – and decided to allow her son to live according to his own gender identity, even if that meant he would wear girls’ clothes.
The boy’s non-custodial father, didn’t agree with the mother’s decision. As a result, he filed for custody.
After going through three judges, custody was awarded to his mother, but required her to keep both boys’ and girls’ clothes available for the son to wear as he chooses.
Is this a human rights issue? Does a 5-year-old understand gender identity?
