Canada’s Food Guide is about to get another revision.
At the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Montreal on Monday morning, federal Health Minister Jane Philpott announced that the government was seeking input from Canadians about particular dietary concerns.
The changes are aimed at reflecting the latest scientific evidence on diet and health, including that of indigenous peoples, and is part of a multi-year Healthy Eating Strategy. Canadians are invited to submit their input until Dec. 8, 2016.
Some of the changes that Health Canada is expected to address include foods containing sodium, trans fats, sugar, food colours as well as marketing to children.
The first food guide, the Official Food Rules was introduced in 1942. Since then it has been revised several times, with the lastest revision in 2007. The guide came under fire in 2015 for being too unrealistic for most Canadians.
