Samsung has stopped manufacturing the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, after a number of fires involving new devices. Many of these were intended to be safe replacements for the first round of recalls.
The company ordered the suspension of sales Monday on the recommendation of safety officials, who say they suspect a new defect in the replacement phones that may not be related to its batteries.
The company issued a statement late Monday night:
Samsung is working globally with relevant regulatory bodies to investigate the recently reported cases involving the Galaxy Note 7. Because consumers’ safety remains our top priority, Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note 7 while the investigation is taking place.
Authorities in the U.S. and South Korea are investigating why even the replacement phones with the safer battery are catching fire.
Is this the end of Samsung? Would you still buy one?
