During a simple response to a family disturbance in Palm Springs, two California police officers were shot and killed while a third officer was injured.
The officers were trying to apprehend a suspect when the gunfire started.
Following a large, wide-scaled manhunt that included several Swat teams and armored police cars, the suspect was captured.
Following the incident, Palm Springs police chief, Brian Reyes, released a statement to the press detailing the names of the fallen officers.
A very shaken Reyes announced the officers names as Jose Vega and Lesley Zerebny.
Zerebny, a 27 year-old female officer who had joined the the California force just 18 months prior and had recently returned from giving birth to a now four-month-old daughter.
Vega, a 35-year veteran and a father of eight children, was planning to retire in December.
Vega, who was not scheduled to work that day, had came in for overtime.
