With John Tory and city council directing the TTC in July to reduce their 2017 operating budget, the commission announced on Tuesday it would switch to single operators on Line 4 in October.
At present, trains on all lines operate with a two man crew, one driver and one guard. With recent technology advances, TTC CEO Andy Byford said staffing two on each train is simply unnecessary, and will ultimately save the TTC $18 million per year without job cuts.
Byford assures riders that the move will not compromise their safety and that many other modern systems in the world, like London, Lisbon , and Berlin operate with single drivers.
The rollout out will take place on October 9th and start with Line 4: Sheppard, eventually moving on to Line 1: Yonge-University after a current signal upgrade is in place.
