A 37-year-old man has been transported to the burn unit at Sunnybrook Hospital after hot tar spilled onto him inside a truck.
The industrial accident happened just before 8 a.m. in the area of Logan Avenue and Danforth Avenue.
Firefighters say the tar splashed on him when the driver of the truck made a hard stop.
Fire crews estimate the tar was heated to about 400 degrees.
Emergency crews were forced to cut open the side of the truck to pull the victim out and say it was difficult because the tar began to harden.
The Toronto Fire platoon chief told the media. “I’ve never seen something of this nature. This patient was actually partially encased.”
Paramedics say the victim is in life-threatening condition.
The Ministry of Labour has been called in to investigate.
Danforth Avenue is closed at Logan Avenue for the investigation.
