John Tory stepped into the world of the everyday commuter, taking the Bloor-Danforth subway in a car without working air-condition from one end to the other. The temperature outside was in the thirties, but with humidity felt more like around 41 C.
Not only did he experience the sweltering conditions of the crowded subway, he also experienced the delays. After catching the 7:30am train, he was expected to reach the other end by 8:30am, however didn’t make it until just after 9:00am.
Tory has pushed the TTC to accelerate work to fix the broken air conditions, however he has also asked that the TTC and all other city agencies and departments cut their budget by 2.6%. That would mean $16 million for the TTC, not to mention they are already facing about $215 million in additional costs next year just to maintain existing service levels.
According to TTC CEO Andy Byford, cutting that amount from the budget would require “unpalatable” measures like eliminating service, or possibly delaying the opening of the York Spadina Subway Extension.
Tory has stated Wednesday that he would not support cutting service. Will this ride on the subway change anything? Or was it just for the publicity? Do you think anything will come of it?
