The latest standardized test scores found that 50 percent of Grade 6 students in Ontario failed to meet the math provincial standards.
This compares to 58 percent in 2012, according to Ontario’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). The falling scores have been linked to several issues, including the teachers’ lack of math proficiency, and students’ growing anxiety towards math. Math scores have been declining in every province except Quebec. The Ontario government, meanwhile, is rolling out a $60 million plan for this school year to bring three math-specialist teachers to every school in the province.
What do you think is going on? Is it the method or the lack of science and math background from teachers?
