Metrolinx is giving consumers the heads up on a PRESTO fare card scam involving the purchase of used cards.
The crown transport agency recommending that customers should not purchase used cards from unauthorized resellers.
A recent scam has seen sellers loading cards with as much as $500 then offering it for sale at a much lower price. After showing the potential purchaser proof that the card is loaded, the reseller reports the card lost or stolen which freezes the funds.
Metrolinx urges customers to buy only from authorized users.
PRESTO is a state-of-the-art electronic fare payment system available across 11 transit agencies in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and Ottawa.
Using smart-card technology that stores funds in a secure account, it replaces the need for tickets, tokens, passes or cash.
PRESTO is set to be installed on all Toronto Transit Commission vehicles and all of its stations by the end of the year.
