It has not been said many times this summer but rain boots and umbrellas will certainly be required on Tuesday.
A special weather statement has been issued by Environment Canada for Toronto and the GTA as heavy rain moves into the region.
A significant storm is bearing down on the city which could bring 20 to 40 millimetres, with the rain expected to keep falling until late afternoon.
According to the weather agency, “the rain is expected to be periodic in nature with significant breaks in the precipitation during the day. However, the rain may fall heavily at times and a few thunderstorms are likely as well.”
Rainfall amounts may even exceed 50 mm where showers and thunderstorms are most prevalent.
As a result, Toronto Region Conservation Authority is warning residents that there is a heightened potential for flooding in low-lying areas.
Meantime, it’s not yet known if the outage is power related but Toronto Hydro is reporting that nearly 5,000 customers are without power in the Steeles, 401, Victoria Park, Midland area.
Crew are on site and it’s not yet known when power will be restored.
Toronto police are also reporting a number of collision on the roads of the city this morning.
