Markham’s own Andre De Grasse has taken Bronze in Rio.
The sprinter, who was competing in his first ever Olympic final on Sunday night, came in third in the men’s 100 metre dash, in a personal best time of 9.91 seconds.
Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt took gold and in the process became the first person to win three straight Olympic 100 metre titles.
American Justin Gatlin took silver.
Speaking of his win, De Grasse said ”I’m speechless, they’re probably jumping up and down screaming back home in Canada.”
It’s been 20 years since a Canadian last took to the podium in the event, Donovan Bailey took gold in Atlanta in 1996.
In winning the medal, De Grasse also became the first man to win hardware for Canada in Rio.
