Police in Peel Region have laid charges against a Toronto couple in connection with a fraud investigation.
According to police, 50 year old Sandra Samaroo, who was at one time employed as a case worker for the Ontario Works Assistance Program for the Region of Peel, used her position to manipulate people into making false claims for benefits offered by the region.
She would then personally approve them and take some of the money for herself.
It’s also alleged that Samaroo would introduce clients to her common law spouse, 57 year old Mootilal Ramphal who posed as a spiritual healer.
He would offer his services as a healer to these clients who paid him in return.
Investigators say Samaroo’s fraud totaled about $50,000 while Ramphal defrauded people of about $5,000.
The pair were arrested on Friday.
It’s feared there may be other victims and police are urging anyone with concerns to come forward.
They can contact Fraud Investigators at (905) 453-2121, ext. 3330, while information can also be left anonymously by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
