A 26-year-old man is facing charges after it’s alleged he climbed into the second-floor room of a Whitby home in the middle of the night and pointed a fake gun at two sleeping occupants while claiming to be a police officer.
Durham Regional Police said the accused was wearing body armour and used a ladder to get up into the room around 3 a.m. Sunday in the area of Watford Street and Carnwith Drive East.
Police said that when the victims fled to another room holding two more sleeping people the accused followed after them, continuing to wield the imitation firearm.
Eventually all involved ended up in the backyard, where police said two of the home’s male residents accosted the man and made a citizen’s arrest.
Police said the man suffered injuries during the arrest and was taken to hospital.
They said the incident was not random.
Kevin McCarthy, of Oshawa, is charged with break and enter with intent, use of an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes, personation of a peace officer and disguise with intent.
He’s also facing four counts each of point firearm and forcible confinement, and five counts of fail to comply with recognizance.
Police said Monday he was being held for a bail hearing.
