A Brampton woman found guilty of manslaughter in the 2009 death of her pregnant sister in law has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
27 year Poonam Litt was reported missing in February of 2009, however her body was not found until 2012.
Her sister in law, 39 year old Mandeep Punia was arrested in connection with her death shortly after and she has been in custody ever since.
She was acquited of second-degree murder in April of this year and convicted on the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Delivering the sentence Justice Steve Coroza said Punia will serve a reduced sentence of 6 years, 5 months and 12 days due to time served in custody.
Punia’s husband, Skinder Punia was also found guilty of acting as an accessory after the fact to manslaughter in the death of Litt.
