The driver of the dump truck which smashed into the Burlington Skyway Bridge nearly two years ago, has been sentenced to one year in jail for dangerous driving.
As well, Sukhvinder Rai was also banned from driving for three years.
Back on July 31, 2014, the Brampton man was driving the dump truck with its box extended, which caused over $1 million damage to the structure.
It was so badly damaged, it was ordered closed for several days over the Civic holiday for safety reasons, which caused major gridlock and forced traffic to spill into the city’s normally quiet residential areas.
Rai was originally looking at additional charges of impaired driving, but the breathalyzer tests were done after the allowable window under the Criminal code; the judge ruled those results were inadmissible.
It is not clear if the sentence will be appealed.
