French Government officials say the death toll is high after a truck plowed through a holiday crowd in the resort city of Nice.
French President Francois Hollande who took to public airwaves said “the terrorist character” of the attack cannot be denied. Hollande revealed that the deceased included some children.
The French Interior Minister confirmed a death toll of 84 after a truck drove through crowds who had just watched a fireworks display near the Promenade des Anglais.
After running down a number of event goers, Police exchanged gun fire with the assailant driving the vehicle, shooting the male driver dead.
French authorities also reported that explosives, firearms, and ammunition were discovered after a search of the truck.
The Prosecutor’s office in Paris has opened a terrorism investigation.
