Toronto Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti believes that city council’s decision to approve three safe injection sites in the City of Toronto has essentially legalized heroin use.
Council voted Thursday 36-3 in favour of three sites: The Toronto Public Health Office near Dundas and Victoria streets; South Riverdale Community Health Clinic; and the Queen West-Central Toronto Community Health Centre.
Mammoliti pointed to issues surrounding the safe injection site in Vancouver, arguing that the same problems will plague the selected neighbourhoods in Toronto.
Toronto city council also passed a motion Thursday night to ask Queen’s Park to consider banning the use of cellphones by pedestrians walking on crosswalks and roadways.
City councillor John Matlow voted against the motion, which ultimately passed 26-15.
He told Global News “police don’t enforce distracted driving and speeding well enough, never mind have the resources to go after everyone looking at their cellphones.”
Giorgio Mammoliti explained to The John Oakley Show that Councillor Frances Nunziata seemed to treat her own motion as a joke, and was surprised when a majority of councillors voted in favour of it.
