Those results from an Ipsos Reid poll also reveal that 72% have deliberately chosen not to wear it.
Dermatologist Dr. Lisa Kellett believes that many have turned away from the skin-saving product because of unfounded uncertainty over the ingredients in sunscreen.
“The reality is there is no sound scientific data to support these claims,” Dr. Kellett told the Globe & Mail. “Your risk of getting skin cancer is so much higher if you don’t wear sunscreen than any possible risks associated with its ingredients.”
Supermodel Gisele Bundchen declared in 2011 that sunscreen was “poison”.
Dr. Jennifer Beecker, national chair of the Canadian Dermatology Association’s sun awareness program, claims that they have “years of documented research that prove sunscreen prevents three known cancers – melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.”
