In April, Collet Stephan and her husband David Stephan were convicted of failing to provide the necessaries of life for their 19 month old son Ezekiel, who died in 2012 of bacterial meningitis after the parents waited 2 1/2 weeks to seek hospital medical treatment for their toddler son and only after he stopped breathing.
Sentencing took place Friday. David Stephan will go to prison for four months while his wife Collet will spend three months under strict house arrest. Speaking in the film Vaxxed, David Stephan referenced media and the courts as “an incredible lying machine.” Even now the Stephan’s argue they are the victims … while the judge stated the prison sentence for the father is at least partially based on the fact David Stephan shows “a complete lack of remorse.” A website set up to support the Stephan’s asks whether “Alberta justice framed Zeke’s parents.” they were perhaps framed by Alberta justice.
Is anything served by sending the parents to prison? Is sending David Stephan to prison useful? Is sentencing Collet Stephan to three months ‘strict’ house arrest useful? Should they face a more strict penalty? The crown wanted between 3 – 4.5 years in prison for them both.
David Butt is a criminal lawyer who has been following the case, as well as a former crown attorney. He will share his view on the guilty verdict/sentence.
