Yesterday was Fete Nationale in Quebec. We in Canada have held our own version of Brexit twice in recent history with Quebecers voting to remain in Canada in 1980 and 1995 when offered the option to remain or leave confederation. In ’95, “remain” won by a razor thin margin. Justin Trudeau was booed for including English in his remarks at a Fete Nationale event in QC yesterday.
Just two months ago emotions ran high in public and on-air in Alberta and Western Canada, particularly when Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre, representing more than 80 area Mayors said “non!” to pipelines originating in the Alberta oil patch passing through Montreal. Alberta guests leaning toward pulling Alberta out of confederation shared their views and response was huge across the network.
