The Toronto Maple Leafs have selected Auston Matthews with the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.
The native of Scottsdale, Arizona has been playing professional hockey in Switzerland and is now the cornerstone of the Leafs, as they continue rebuilding with top prospects in William Nylander and Mitch Marner.
Leafs Nation is celebrating with excitement, as the 18-year-old is the first number one pick by Toronto since 1985 when they selected former captain Wendell Clark.
Matthews has also played youth hockey with the Arizona Bobcats at the AAA level and he was selected for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program when he was 15-years-old.
Critics and analysts expect Matthews to be on the opening roster when the NHL opens their 2016-2017 season this fall.
