After nearly 100 years in business, the Bowmanville Zoo will close its doors at the end of the summer season.
It comes two months after it’s owner was charged with animal cruelty offences.
The OSPCA launched an investigation after reviewing video of Michael Hackenburger using a whip on a tiger during a training exercise.
The video was released by PETA.
Hackenburger was charged with four counts of causing an animal distress and one of failing to comply with standards of care.
During the announced closure, a spokesperson maintained the allegations are simply not true but “the damage is done.”
Attendence figures have dropped since the charges were laid although a number was not given.
Officials are in the process of relocating the animals.
More to come.
