Planned infrastructure improvements along St. Clair will mean some changes for passengers this summer.
Beginning this Sunday, June 19, streetcars on the 512 route will be replaced with buses.
This will allow crews to make adjustments to accommodate the new fleet of streetcars, which are low-floor, accessible and air conditioned.
Those vehicles are scheduled to go into service in 2018.
As for how long this will last, the stretch of tracks between St. Clair and St. Clair West stations will not open until the end of this year. And the stretch between St. Clair West and Gunns Loop should resume streetcar service by September.
“There will be a lot of work going on because this is part of a comprehensive upgrade of the entire 512 St. Clair streetcar route to make it fully accessible. We’ll be continuing to install elevators to provide easier access, installing PRESTO fare gates, we’ll be working on the ramps, completely redoing the tarmac and the concrete. We’ll be working on the overhead wires. So this is a huge job and it really makes the route fit for purpose and fully accessible for the future.” – TTC CEO Andy Byford
