The city hasn’t put a shovel in the ground yet but the projected cost of the Scarborough subway continues to rise.
In 2013 the city estimated that a 3 stop Scarborough subway extension would cost $3.56 Billion. The city now estimated a 3 stop subway extension would actually cost $4.3 Billion.
The cost of the 1 stop subway extension has also jumped by almost $1Billion. Tory say the cost of the Scarborough subway extension will now cost $2.9 Billion, up from the original estimate of $2 Billion.
Mayor Tory says “The original 3 stop subway was approved by city council without the support of any planning or design work actually having been done. In fact it was based on a sketch on a piece of paper given to the TTC.”
Tory also announced the the Scarborough LRT line is budgeted higher at $1.6 billion. That puts the total for the subway extension and the Scarborough LRT at $4.5 billion.
The mayor says he continues to support the Scarborough subway despite the increase in projected costs.
