Two elementary students and their parents are alleging in a lawsuit that the Toronto District School Board has failed to protect them from a classmate with special needs.
Olivia, in Grade 3, and her sister Charlotte, in Grade 1, say John Wanless Junior Public School exposed them to repeated abuse, both physical and verbal, by a bully identified as Student L, who is a special needs student.
They claim that they’ve been pushed, hit with objects, nearly stabbed with a paper clip, threatened, and pinched on the rear end.
The school tried separating the students, and even brought in a special needs assistant, but these steps did not reduce the bullying behaviour according to the family.
Does classroom integration between special needs and non-special needs students work? Do Ontario schools have the resources necessary to accommodate special needs children?
