Conservative MP Bob Zimmer wants to make it easier for the Canadian public to obtain and use an AR-15, the semi-automatic rifle used by Omar Mateen during the Orlando shootings.
Zimmer tabled a petition in Parliament on May 13, notes the Huffington Post, requesting that the federal government designate the AR-15 as a non-restricted weapon.
Canadians are allowed to own the AR-15, but must obtain a special license. Most are only permitted to use one in a gun range.
Reclassifying the rifle as a non-restricted weapon would allow Canadians to use it outside of a range and, in Zimmer’s words, “once again use this rifle to lawfully participate in the Canadian cultural practices of hunting in Canada.”
