22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie has died after being shot following a performance in Orlando on Friday, according to her publicist.
At a news conference late Friday, police officials said that Grimmie, 22, was shot around 10:45 p.m. local time at The Plaza Live where she had performed with the band Before You Exit earlier that night.
Police said the suspect shot Grimmie after her show, while merchandise was being sold and autographs written. Officials also said that Grimmie’s brother tackled the shooter who then shot himself.
There is no known motive for the shooting, and an investigation continues.
Sgt. Wanda Miglio said during a news conference after the shooting that about 60 to 100 people were in attendance, though only a handful remained when the shooting happened.
Miglio said she did not know what security was like at the venue, or how the shooter got two guns inside. She also said she did not know if off-duty officers were working the concert.
Grimmie, a New Jersey native, finished third during season six of NBC’s “The Voice.”
The young singers name was trending on Twitter after the incident under the hashtags #PrayForChristina and #RIPChristina, and many celebrities also expressed their support for her while she was still in critical condition.
There are no words. We lost a beautiful soul with an amazing voice. Our hearts go out to the friends, fans and family of @TheRealGrimmie.
