For as long as I can remember, a part of my summer has always been spent north of Barrie in the Orillia area. I didn’t grow up there but it really feels like home. When I was really small, we would share or rent cottages. Eventually we purchased a family cottage on the Severn River but sadly we sold that and now my parent’s conveniently live on Lake Couchiching – well its mainly convenient.
When we owned a cottage, it was pretty easy to grease the wheels and get a week up there to myself. Now, I can’t really kick my parents out of their home so I’ve started my own tradition of renting a cottage for a week. I did it for the first time last year and it was really wonderful.
I rented a small 2 bedroom place with a loft on the sandy shores of Lake Simcoe. It had a great rustic cottage charm that only one bathroom and a tube tv with a VCR can provide. I had a few friends pop by for a night or two. My parents brought their boat over one day. We bbq’d, swam, even the cats enjoyed themselves (see photo). We cleaned the place top to bottom including vacuuming when we left. The rental folks I dealt with were also great so I thought I’d give them my business again this year. This time I’ve decided to rent a bigger place and I have one fewer cat to bring along but otherwise, not much has changed… or so I thought!
When I sent off my application, this is the email response I received:
You are making my life difficult this year. Where are the older folks that went with you last year? It’s easier to accept a rental when older folks and / or children are involved. A group of singles in your age category and a cat make the rental a little risky.
You’re going to be good to the place right ?????
I am on your side with this and have sent your request to the owners for their concurrance.
They left for Texas today so, it may be a couple of days before I hear back from them on whether they will accept it.
Have a great day
Feel free to read that over a few times. I know I sure have. To be fully transparent – I’m 30 years old. One of the couples in my group of alleged “singles” is MARRIED and in their mid to late 30’s! I mean how old do I have to be to be considered a ‘safe rental’? This makes me feel like they want me to list my parents as a guarantor! None of these items were brought us as issues the summer before! So if I was married or had a baby, would that make me a ‘safe’ bet? I really didn’t mean to make anyone life difficult by attempting to rent a place for some R&R on my week off this summer.
I’ve heard of ageism but I never thought I would be the target. Now I’m really conflicted on whether I want to give these folks my hard earned millennial money.

So until I find myself a hubby and ditch the cat, I guess I should lying about my age earlier than I planned!
PS leave my cat out of this! That’s hitting below the belt when the listing says PETS WELCOME!
