Are Toronto officials trying to shut down the dozens of medical marijuana dispensaries that have popped up throughout the city in order to make the transition to an LCBO dominated market easier?
Mayor John Tory recently write to Toronto’s licensing officials, asking them to “employ, in conjunction with the Toronto Police Service, whatever enforcement mechanisms are currently available to you to address the health and safety concerns of neighbours and businesses in the communities where these marijuana dispensaries are currently operating unlawfully.”
The mayor suggested in an open letter that the proliferation of dispensaries “brings with it potential health risks for individuals who patronize dispensaries where the substance for sales is completely unregulated.”
Russell Barth, the Angriest Pothead in Canada, believes that shutting down dispensaries would only drive people back to shady drug dealers.
Barth is also convinced that the federal and provincial governments will ultimately allow the sale of marijuana, but only through the LCBO. He points out that many former politicians and police officers have already entered the medical marijuana business.
