They cannot teach math, but they will be in the classroom tomorrow doing exactly that. Significant numbers of elementary school teachers in Ontario are unable to perform the basic mathematics calculations they are instructed to teach their students. Some student teachers break down in tears at the prospect of a math question. Now universities which graduate teachers have instituted special math tests and exams.
Social promotion allows students to move on to the next grade year without understanding what has been academically ‘taught’ in a given year. Are teachers who cannot understand the math themselves teaching to bewildered students the product of social promotion?
