In an interview with Newsweek, Kiss star Gene Simmons praised Prince, who died on April 21 at the age 57.
He then followed up his kind comments with something more negative.
“But how pathetic that he killed himself,” Simmons told his interviewer. “Don’t kid yourself, that’s what he did. Slowly, I’ll grant you… but that’s what drugs and alcohol is: a slow death.”
Not many were happy with Simmons’ comments.
He apologized on Twitter, tweeting, “I just got such shit from my family for my big mouth again.”
Even Kiss lead singer Paul Stanley tweeted “Embarrassed by cold clueless statements re Prince’s death. Without all the facts better to say nothing. My apologies.”
