Mississauga council has banned UberX and all other ride-sharing services.
The vote orders all non-traditional taxi companies to immediately stop picking up passengers.
That means ride sharing companies would have to follow the same regulations governing traditional taxis if they want to continue operating in the city.
There is some hope for ride sharing companies as council voted 10-2 that if Uber suspends its operations immediately, a committee will begin looking at a possible ride-sharing pilot project.
The committee would then report back to council in September.
