The Liberals will launch a formal review of Canada Post on Thursday.
A four member independent panel will examine whether the national letter carrier should continue its plan to end door-to-door delivery.
The task force panel may also look at whether the Crown corporation should get back into the banking business as a way to generate revenue.
The postal service cancelled its financial offerings in 1968.
An interim report is expected to be ready by the end of summer.
The panel will then make final recommendations before December 31, 2016.
