Green Party leader Elizabeth May said Wednesday that climate change played a role in the destructive wildfire that has descended upon Fort McMurray, Alberta.
“The temperature records were being smashed through last month for northern Alberta. It’s due to global emissions. Scientists will say we know with a destabilized climate, with a higher average global temperature, we will see more frequent, more extreme weather events … due to an erratic climate, due to our addiction to fossil fuels.”
However, in a later media statement, she clarified that she wasn’t making a direct link to the situation in Alberta.
Former NDP Lethbridge-East candidate Tom Moffatt tweeted Tuesday night that tragedy in the oil town was “Karmic #climatechange and hashtaged #FeelTheBern. After receiving negative reaction for his comment, Moffatt said his comments were taken out of context.
