On Wednesday hundreds of fire officials were locked in a battle with a wildfire that threatens to burn all of Fort McMurray to the ground.
Strong wind and temperatures as high as 30C were expected to fuel the inferno that has forced a complete evacuation of the area’s 80,000 residents and destroyed the neighbourhoods of Beacon Hill and Watersway.
People are taking shelter in nearby work camps or fleeing to Edmonton, which is a 5 hour drive when the roads are clear of traffic. Highway 63 is currently packed with vehicles and gas stations are seeing 2-mile-long lineups.
