A study (not peer reviewed) by UBC Psychology Professor Stanley Coren recommends that you STOP HUGGING YOUR DOG!
The dog expert says your dog actually despises those hugs, which raise their stress and anxiety levels.
Signs that your dog is stressed out by a warm embrace include:
– baring their teeth
– showing a “half-moon eye”- closing their eyes
– yawning or raising one paw
Not hugging your dog is actually a widely accepted practice amongst dog behaviourists.
In fact, Dr. Coren points out, “when a children’s book came out saying that you should hug the dog all the time, the American Veterinarian Society actually put out a formal statement and said don’t buy the book because your child will get bit.”
