AnnaMaria Valastro, lead campaigner for Peaceful Parks, is demanding that Kathleen Wynne cancel the province’s spring bear hunt.
She argues that the hunt, introduced in 2014, has actually led to a massive increase in human-bear encounters. She cites Greater Sudbury Police Service statistics that reveal 134 bear calls in 2003 (no bear hunt) and 1,775 in 2015.
Valastro believes that the hunt is forcing bears to seek safety near human civilization, where food sources are abundant.
“Liberals are peddling a false sense of security, and refuse to take action on hunting practices that exacerbate the problem,” she said in The Toronto Star.
